Office of Naval Research
Project/Contract Name:
Office of Naval Research (ONR) / Adoption of Advanced Training Technologies and Initial Development of the Portable Advanced Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Digital Companion
Project Description:
Our team conducted requirements analysis, architectural and detail software design, implementation, testing and documentation of the Portable Advanced Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Digital Companion, a java web based software tool developed using an iterative development cycle and a Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) that allows the Advanced IED graduate warfighter to have access to a quick reference guide of the most important aspects of the Advanced IEDD training including incident database retrieval, lexicon, tactics, techniques and procedures web browser, and computer based training material. The following tasks have been undertaken:
- Identification of advanced training technologies that can be applied to military training such as the Advanced IED Defeat School (AIEDD) in order to optimize training requirements, electronic curriculum development, virtual training technologies, as well as modeling and simulation technologies such as ONR-VAST, VIRTE (Virtual Technologies and Environments) and MSR (Maritime Synthetic Range).
- Conducted requirements analysis and a prototype of the web reference based tool. The prototype was demonstrated to the customer and modified as necessary to address specific functional and user interface requirements.
- Developed the software architecture (SOA) in a plug-in modular way. Each repository of information that has to be accessed can develop its own plug-in to grant access to the information.
- Integrated java based open source Lucene as a search engine for the system.
- Currently developing additional plug-ins such as tactics, techniques and procedures browser, incident searching, and lexicon services.
